Mamalagel’s Bagels’ Hulea: Sourcing Local Ingredients

Sarah Hulea, co-owner of Mamalagel’s Bagels based in Canfield, is coming back strong, along with her mom and co-owner, Nancy. Learn more about Mamalagel’s at its website.

What are some ways your business is rebounding from the effects of COVID-19?

To be honest, I feel like my business only just began in the midst of COVID-19! My mom and I started making bagels in the spring of 2019 but took a break over the winter season to re-evaluate things and figure out our next move. I wasn’t sure if I could run a small business, especially during these challenging times, however, once I saw the various markets were going to be back up and running in June, I had to try! And trying is what we have been doing! We’ve been selling our bagels at local farmers’ markets and events.

What’s been the reaction from customers so far?

The response has been good! Lots of repeat customers! We’re getting our name out there, hopefully enough that we can transition to an online ordering/delivery system once the local markets subside this fall.

What impact has the outbreak had on you personally?

Where to start?! I’ve always felt a little out of sorts in life, but the pandemic has definitely heightened all of my emotions. It was tough in the beginning but I think being able to break free from my former 9 to 5 job has actually helped a little bit with my anxiety in the long run. With starting my own business, I’m able make my own hours and run the show, which has given me more control of my life!

What advice are you sharing with the people you love?

Hmmm, advice. I think my loved ones have shared more advice with me than I have with others. I like to listen and then form my own opinions about what to believe and not to believe. These are strange times and I think we’re all just doing the best we can!

What ways is your business working to support other local businesses during these times?

One main goal for our recipes in 2020 was to incorporate as many local businesses as we could. Hopefully, that list will grow as time goes on. Currently, we source our corn meal and whole wheat flour from Lanterman’s Mill, various produce from Angiuli’s Farm, and parmesan cheese and sundried tomatoes from Rulli Bros. Market. We also partner with a local food truck, A Movable Feast, which features a menu item called the Youngstown hot chicken sandwich. They use our sriracha everything bagel with their fried chicken and house-made pickles. I highly recommend trying it if they are visiting your area!
