Bishop Murry: ‘Amazing What Human Spirit Can Overcome’

UPDATE: Bishop Murry passed away June 5, 2020. Read more here.

Bishop George V. Murry of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is hanging tough. You can read more about Bishop Murry at the diocese website.

What are some ways the COVID-19 outbreak has changed your work life?

This Easter many including myself will feel the pain of isolation. As bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown, I remember that a new element has been introduced into our lives. All will be made whole again because Jesus is alive and speaks his words of peace, healing and hope.

How about your personal life?

The COVID 19 outbreak invites me to celebrate my life in a new and different way each day. A slower pace but to incorporate hope. It is amazing what the human spirit can endure and overcome provided it is nourished with hope.

What steps are you taking to hang tough?

Each day I remember that our faith must be stronger than our fears. Each day I give thanks for the day.

What advice are you sharing with the people you love?

To be kind. To be grateful for those who are called to care for the sick and suffering. And to remember that we can face the difficulties of this time because we know that this, too, will end and that we will enjoy the fullness of life again.
