John Sferra: Playing Music, Sprucing Up Home Studio

John Sferra, drummer with Glass Harp, the John Sferra Trio and other bands, is hanging tough. You can read more about John at his website.

What are some ways the COVID-19 outbreak has changed your work life?

I’m semi-retired and I work mostly from home these days. I was a working musician all my life and it’s hard to imagine not being able to go out and earn a living. The impulse to be in front of people and perform is very strong in musicians. I know if I was still gigging locally, I would be kind of depressed. Feeling worthless.

How about your personal life?

My personal life has been changed drastically. My favorite thing is going out to eat with my friends and family. Going shopping with my significant other. I like to get up and go places whenever the mood strikes me. I don’t do that now.

What steps are you taking to hang tough?

I’m practicing my instruments — drums and guitar. Repairing things in my home studio that I’ve neglected like cords, upgrading my computer software. House projects in general. Getting into cooking again, reading, meditation and calling friends.

What advice are you sharing with the people you love?

Don’t be afraid. If you feel like panicking, think of other people that you might be able to help. When you wash your hands, say a prayer instead of counting to 20.
