Quint’s Auto Body’s DeSantis: Carrying On Father’s Legacy

Christian DeSantis, owner of Quint’s Auto Body in Boardman, is coming back strong. Learn more about the autobody shop at its Facebook page.

What are some ways the COVID-19 outbreak has affected your organization, and how is it rebounding?

Although we were considered “essential” and weren’t forced to shut down, the outbreak had a significant effect on our organization.  With less people out on the roads going to work and school, there was a tremendous decline of people who required our services. In addition, people who were looking to make improvements to their cars (not strictly from damage) put those plans on hold due to the economy/job loss. Thankfully with the economy reopening and summer travel restarting, we are rebounding nicely. However, it is challenging to make up two months of lost revenue.

How has the outbreak affected your personal life?

The worst part for me personally during the outbreak was the death of my father. He did not pass from COVID-19, however, when you cannot have a proper funeral or celebrate the life of the man you loved most, there is nothing more heartbreaking.  It really put into perspective what is important in life.  Family is everything and although the business was adding some stress, my father started the shop, which made it all the more important for me to carry on and continue its success.   In addition, when your family relies on your paycheck, it puts a strain on your personal life.  My family is extremely supportive.  My wife was also considered essential and worked throughout the shutdown.  I have two kids. One of them is heading off to college soon, so again, the stress of paying for college and knowing that she can safely start this next step has been stressful.

What steps are you taking to come back strong?

The small business loans were helpful, but as any small business will tell you, it was not an easy process.  We are using the loans to not just keep all employees on payroll, but help employ the safety measures required by the CDC.  We are letting the community know we are here for them and are doing things in a way they can trust.

What advice are you sharing with the people you love?

No one can prepare for this.  I want my loved ones to know that I am extremely concerned about their safety first and foremost.  I also want them to know that with the backing of a strong community, a small business CAN thrive. And in a place like Youngstown where family is SO important, being there for your friends and neighbors is what will keep us going.
