Avalon’s Sabella: Walk-Up Window Sales, Wise Use Of Time

Anne Massullo Sabella, co-owner of Avalon Downtown in Youngstown, is coming back strong. You can read more about the restaurant at its Facebook page.

What are some ways your restaurant is rebounding from the effects of COVID-19?

We reorganized our take-out system and have been using our walk-up window, as we have decided for now to keep dine-in closed. It has been a tremendous adjustment for all of us. But we realize that it is best to accept things that are out of our control.

Prior to the shutdown, we started some renovations after a fire next door caused smoke damage inside the restaurant. Additional renovations that were planned for later in the year were bumped up; we’ve taken advantage of the extra time to paint, tile and redo the flooring, in addition to completing some bathroom renovations.

What’s been the reaction from customers so far?

Customers have been very nice, and they keep asking when we are opening for dine-in service. We have even sold out of pizzas a few times, which is a testament to the strong support of our community!

What impact has the outbreak had on you personally?

The hardest adjustment for me has been the extra time I have had during this season. I am used to multi-tasking and never getting everything done in a day. When you grow accustomed to working 12 to 14-hour days and then everything changes, it is a big adjustment!

What advice are you sharing with the people you love?

This will pass. We need to just try to be patient and have faith in God to take care of us.
